Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her maternal grandparents and mother. She suffered from an anxiety disorder caused by word associations as a young teenager. Ford's passion for acting started as a child. Ford joined at the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after only a month, she decided that it wasn't for her. Ford rather than applying for admission to Central School of Speech and Drama and securing a place on her third attempt made an application and secured acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of Ford's classmates. Ford graduated in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in TV programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate would also frequently work in theatre and eventually joined The Royal Shakespeare Company during its season between 2000 and 2001. Tate gained recognition for her comedy stand-up that became part of her repertoire in 1996.
